GLOBAL TALENT (DISTINGUISHED TALENT)
(Non-Invited Stream)

SUBCLASS 858

Australia offers a small number of permanent visas for internationally recognised people with a record of exceptional and outstanding achievement in their field.

Introduction

Originally known as the Distinguished Talent visa, this visa has now been re-named Global Talent, and split into two distinct streams:

  • An Invitation-Only Stream – Global Talent (Independent) – for people in target sectors of the economy (covered on a separate page); and
  • A Non-Invited Stream – Distinguished Talent – for high profile people in any fields, including sports, the arts, professions, and academia.   The non-invited visa is covered on this page.

Nomination is required from an Australian citizen, PR or eligible New Zealand citizen, with a national reputation in the same field, or from an organisation which is the peak national body for the person’s talent.

People who receive a Global Talent Visa through the Non-Invited Stream, have a streamlined pathway to Citizenship, with a significant reduction in the residence requirement.

We have considerable experience with this visa and have successfully managed many high profile Global Talent and Distinguished Talent cases.

What are the eligibility requirements?

You must be a person who is internationally recognised in your field, and can add value to Australia.  Examples could include:

  • Sportspeople who compete at international level; or who are likely to be selected to represent Australia in international competitions such as the Olympics;
  • Actors, singers, entertainers, television and film personalities who are internationally known;
  • Artists, business people such as architects, company directors, entrepreneurs in any field.   Many business people may instead be eligible for the Invited Stream of Global Talent.

To be successful in applying for this visa, you must:

  • Be nominated by an eligible person or organization with a national reputation in your field and high regard throughout Australia;
  • Demonstrate your talent to the Department of Home Affairs through a well constructed visa application;
  • Provide evidence of the benefit you will bring to Australia;
  • Meet health and character requirements (a health waiver may be available)
Note that this is a Capped Visa Class; and only a small number of visas are issued each year (the planned allocation in 2024-25 is just 300).  The processing time could be lengthy as a result – possibly several years.

It is also subjectively assessed, and therefore it is very important to put your best foot forward with an application.

What will this visa provide?

  • Permanent residency of Australia
  • Rights to work and study in Australia
  • Travel rights to and from Australia for five years
  • Access to Medicare, Australia’s health system
  • A health waiver may be exercised during visa processing, if an applicant does not meet the health requirement
