I’m a New Zealand citizen wanting to move to Australia - what are my options?
There are no shortcuts to anywhere worth going.
New Zealand citizens may have access to additional visa options in Australia including:
- Special Category Visa (Subclass 444) provides temporary residency, allowing you to live, work and study in Australia on an ongoing basis.
- Skilled Independent Visa (NZ Stream) (Subclass 189) provides Australian permanent residency, including work and study. You’ll need to have lived in Australia for a continuous period of 5 years before applying and meet certain income requirements.
- Resident Return Visa is for New Zealand citizens who entered Australia before 1st September 1994, even if just for a holiday, as they were then considered permanent residents. This visa reinstates this permanent residency.
- Australian Citizenship is available by two separate pathways. If you arrived in Australia before 26th February 2001, you may be able to apply for citizenship directly. If you arrived after this time, you’ll need to become a permanent resident before you can apply for citizenship.
